Trials and Tribulations
|
|
Our
experiences with trials can often be very painful, but the Bible
teaches us that we do not have to dread these events in our lives.
By understanding why we all must go through
trials and knowing how we should respond to them, our
tribulations
can become something that we actually find joy in.
|
|
Why
Trials
Happen...
|
| To
Develop
Perseverance In Us |
So We
Can Help Others
|
So We Can
Learn To Trust God |
Rom.
5:1-5 - Therefore, since we have been justified through
faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this
grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of
God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,
because we know that suffering produces
perseverance; perseverance, character; and character,
hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured
out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
James 1:2-4 -
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many
kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith
develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so
that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
|
2 Cor. 1:3-7 -
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all
our
troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort
we ourselves have received from God. For just as the
sufferings of
Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort
overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and
salvation;
if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you
patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our
hope for
you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,
so also you share in our comfort. |
2 Cor.
1:8-11
- We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we
suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far
beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of
life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But
this
happened
that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the
dead. He
has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us.
On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver
us, as
you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf
for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many. |

Job's
Understanding of Trials |
2 Cor. 12:7-10
- To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly
great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger
of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord
to take
it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient
for you,
for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all
the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on
me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses,
in
insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am
weak, then I am strong.
|
Rom. 8:16-18
- The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's
children. Now if we are children, then we are
heirs—heirs
of
God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in
order that we may also share in his glory. I consider that our
present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be
revealed in us.
2 Cor.
1:5 - For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into
our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
Philip.
3:10-11
- I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the
fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his
death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the
dead.
1 Pet.
4:12-16
- Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are
suffering, as though something strange were happening to
you. But
rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you
may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are
insulted
because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory
and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a
murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.
However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise
God that you bear that name. |
Job 1:21
- And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I
return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be
the name of the LORD. (KJV)
Job
2:9-10 -
Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity?
curse God, and die. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one
of the
foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God,
and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his
lips. (KJV) |

Heb.
12:2-6 -
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,
who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider
him who
endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow
weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin, you have not yet
resisted to
the
point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten that word
of
encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of
the Lord's
discipline, and do not lose
heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes
everyone he accepts as a son."
James
5:10-11
- Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take
the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know,
we
consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's
perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The
Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
|
Luke
18:7-8
- And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones,
who
cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I
tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when
the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"
2 Tim.
4:16-18
- At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted
me. May it not be held against them. But the Lord stood at my
side
and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully
proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from
the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil
attack and
will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever
and ever. Amen.
Rejoice Through Our Sufferings
Acts
5:40-42
- His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them
flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and
let them go. The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they
had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after
day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped
teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
James 1:2-4 -
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many
kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith
develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so
that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
|
1 Cor.
4:9-13-
For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end
of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been
made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to
men. We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ!
We
are weak,
but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To
this
very
hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated,
we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are
cursed,
we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are
slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum
of the earth, the refuse of the world.
1
Cor. 10:13
- No temptation
has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he
will not
let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,
he will
also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
1 Pet.
4:19 - So then, those who suffer according to God's will
should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do
good.
1
Pet. 5:8-10 - Be
self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a
roaring
lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the
faith,
because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing
the
same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to
his
eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will
himself
restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

Other
Encouraging Verses...
|
| Isa. 40:27-31 - Why
do you say, O Jacob, and
complain, O Israel, "My way is
hidden from the LORD; my cause
is disregarded by my God"? Do you not know? Have you
not heard? The LORD
is the everlasting God, the
Creator of the ends of the earth. He will
not grow tired or weary, and his
understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and
increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and
young
men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew
their strength. They will
soar on wings like eagles; they will
run and not grow weary, they will
walk and not be faint. |
Mat.
11:28-30
- "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle
and
humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my
yoke
is easy and my burden is light."
John
14:1-3
-
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in
me. In
my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have
told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if
I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me
that you also may be where I am." |
Rom. 8:28 - And we
know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to
them who are the called according to his purpose. (KJV)
Heb.
13:5-6 - Keep your lives free from the love of money and
be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I
leave you; never will I forsake
you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I
will not be afraid. What can man do to
me?" |
Testimonies
From The Bible About Trials...
|
2 Cor.
4:4-18-
The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that
they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is
the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus
Christ
as
Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God,
who
said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our
hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the
face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to
show
that
this
all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard
pressed
on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in
despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not
destroyed. We
always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of
Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive
are
always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may
be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in
us,
but
life is at work in you. It is written: "I believed; therefore
I
have
spoken."With
that
same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore
speak, because
we
know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also
raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his
presence. All
this
is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more
people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of
God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are
wasting
away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our
light
and
momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far
outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen,
but on
what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is
eternal.
|
2 Cor.
6:3-10-
We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will
not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in
every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and
distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard
work,
sleepless nights
and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness;
in
the
Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the
power
of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the
left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report;
genuine,
yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown;
dying,
and
yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet
always
rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet
possessing everything.
Heb.
11:32-40-
And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,
Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets, who
through
faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was
promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of
the
flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to
strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign
armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again.
Others were
tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better
resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, while still
others
were
chained and put in prison. They were stoned; they were sawed
in
two;
they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and
goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—the world
was
not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in
caves and holes in the ground. These were all commended for their
faith, yet none of them
received what had been promised. God had planned something
better
for
us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. |
2 Cor.
11:21-31 - To my shame I admit that we were too weak for
that! What anyone else dares to boast about—I
am speaking
as a fool—I also dare to boast about. Are they
Hebrews? So
am
I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they Abraham's descendants? So am
I. Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk
like
this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more
frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again
and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty
lashes minus
one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned,
three
times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open
sea, I
have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in
danger from bandits, in danger from my own countrymen, in danger from
Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at
sea; and in danger from false brothers. I have labored and
toiled and
have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have
often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides
everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the
churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into
sin,
and I do not inwardly burn? If I must boast, I will boast of the things
that show my
weakness. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be
praised
forever, knows that I am not lying.
